BMI is misleading. You’re counting nearly every high school, collegiate, amateur or professional athlete in the country. Or are Lebron James and Michael Phelps overweight?
December 16th, 2008 at 4:18 am
Correction. BMI can be misleading. Not IS misleading. Sure in the examples of high muscle mass athletes BMI is not exactly a great measure but for the average person it is a good indication of where you stand. The fact is these statistics are probably a great indication since if their was a country with so many pro athletes that the BMI statistic was actually dragging up the counties average wed know about it. As it turns out there is no country on the planet with that many high muscle mass athletes.
The fact is I have been to every country in the top 5 and the only one that surprises me here is Greece. The top three are very very obvious. Surprised to see the USA is only on 31% though.
PS. Who the hell is Lebron James? Hes certainly not internationally renowned. Never even heard the name before.

Eh…?
Germany at 13% and the czech republic at 15%? I’ve lived in both, and from my experience, in general, there were more obese people in Germany than in the CR (an observation mirrored by my aquaintances) Also, just recently a study showed Germans to be the most obese European people, so something definitly doesn’t add up here.

good but i thank u should change da usa bcuz der is more obesity than 31%
March 18th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
It’s OK but I think you should double check ratios
March 23rd, 2009 at 2:18 am
Its not necessarily MORE fat people, its just a higher percent. Germany is more populated then CR, so its gonna have a lower percentage even if the AMOUNT is still the same.

BMI is a screwed-up system anyway. There are 3 separate charts that are supposed to be used — one for small body frames, one for medium body frames, and one for large body frames. Actually, six — these charts are different for women and men.
Also, it IS more fat people. 31% of 300,000,000 people in America means 93 million people are obese, in America alone. Or, as Richard Jeni put it, one out of every three Americans weighs as much as the other two.

Obesity rate is not going well. We increase dramatically. That is not good.
April 12th, 2009 at 12:52 am
Isn’t weird that a developing country is the 2nd most obese country?
April 27th, 2009 at 8:28 pm
plainsdrifter:
Why would that be weird? In today’s world, it’s normal for lower-income folks to be overweight. You can buy a 2200 calorie burger for 89¢ while actual food would cost maybe $2 or $3.

Could it be possible to update this graphic with information from reliable sources such us OMS and un to 2008, please? It is very illustrative for my presentations

lebron james is NBA player. His BMI is 27.
June 7th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Many of you have pointed out flaws in the system, but there’s one that you all missed. This chart shows the percent of overweight people, not how greatly overweight the overweight people are. As for me, I’m almost, but not quite, underweight. (I wonder how underweight statistics compare.)

Thanks for the useful info. It’s so interesting

bmi IS misleading. i am just on the cusp of being overweight with 6% body fat
March 4th, 2010 at 3:47 pm
BMI is on point. Over 30 is overweight even if you are Phelps. I doubt he is though. If your body fat percentage is 6% you can still be overweight and therefore tax your organs, joints, and your system overall forcing in excess calories. Lighter people live longer. http://www.OrganicFitness.Org Do the research.

For some reason my post doesn’t show up. So I’m going to break it down, just in case it’s a matter of quantity.
March 24th, 2010 at 1:00 am
All of you who use definite articles, ie. it IS this, it IS that….
Are wrong.
Unless there are 100% factual sources, that will represent 100% of the cases (or at least a VERY vast majority) then the phrase you need is “may be”.
I am 6′4” with a BMI of 31. Normally, that’d be bad. But with my build, it’s just enough meat on my bones to not fall apart.
March 24th, 2010 at 1:00 am
Regardless of how accurate BMI is person to person, in general, it is the most accurate AND most documentable (without being entirely too invading of your privacy) method of producing this information.
Now, that being said, I’m sure most of you would agree that this chart is ABOUT right. Probably not exact. But the statistics are fair.
March 24th, 2010 at 1:01 am
Also. For those of you who have said “I’ve been here and there, and that’s CLEARLY wrong”, think again. I’ve been to LA and New York, and I’ve seen some pretty fat fuggers people. But I’ve also been to Wyoming, and I’ve been to Montana, and I’ve seen some pretty thin people, too. While it may seem one way or another, unless you personally document an entire nation, your single, uninformed, rationalized, narrow perception (ie, I’ve seen this one place ((or even a few places)) in this one nation, so CLEARLY the entire nation must be this way) is useless.
