Right, because it does not also mean: “a relatively small dominant group with a larger society, which enjoys a privileged status ehich us upheld by individuals of a lower status within the structure”
From that Latin: to elect…. which pretty much means that whimever is elected will be the elite, don’t it?

I think when used in the pejorative sense recently people are referring to the wealthy, rather than the talented and useful elite, which I think is the point Hawke was trying to make.
